August once again proved to be a weak month in terms of wind. “Production was only around 73 per cent of the expected volume“, says Markus W. Voigt, CEO of the aream Group. “In terms of solar power, however, Germany and Spain exceeded expectations; only Italy was weaker due to the weather.“ This showed once again that electricity and wind complement each other well, but that base load capacity still needs to be established through storage.

In the coming years, municipalities and their municipal utilities will not only have to manage the energy transition, but also the heating transition. “The times when municipal utilities transferred profits to their municipalities on a grand scale are over for the time being”, says Markus W. Voigt, CEO of the aream Group. “On the contrary, the need for investment now often has to be met by the municipalities - often with the help of private investors.”

Gas has become more expensive again on the energy markets and is also pushing up the price of electricity. This is exacerbating the problem of already relatively high energy costs for companies. ‘There is a solution to this: long-term supply contracts for green electricity,’ says Markus W. Voigt, CEO of the aream Group. PPAs not only offer cost control, but also serve the sustainability goals of companies.

It is not yet clear whether artificial intelligence will revolutionise the economy. But one thing is clear: there is no way around artificial intelligence, or AI for short, and its expansion is unstoppable. This is accompanied by a drastic increase in energy requirements for more and more data centres, the control centres of AI. ‘This demand can only be met sensibly with renewables,’ explains Markus W. Voigt, CEO of the aream Group. Like the major US tech companies, more and more companies are starting to build and utilise their own plants to produce renewable energy.
